Although the title of this book implies that it is about the westward expansion movement after the Civil War, the history book really begins during the war.  McPherson takes us from the last days of the war through the turbulent times when the country try to heal the wounds and come together as a country again.  You'll learn about the carpet baggers who often had good intentions.  You'll also learn about the beginnings of the Ku Klux Klan and the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson.  Then learn about the forced removal of Native Americans and cattle drives.  There are many illustrations as well.
